Ellen Kay (Shanks) Anderson, age 61, of Xenia, went to her Heavenly home on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023, after a three-month battle with blood cancer. She passed away at Hospice of Dayton, surrounded by her loving family.
Ellen was born Dec. 19, 1961, in Wilmington, Ohio, to Marlin Shanks and Miriam (McCall) Johnson and grew up in New Burlington. She attended Clinton-Massie High School and was a 1980 graduate of the cosmetology program at Laurel Oaks Career Development Center.
Surviving Ellen are her husband, David, whom she married April 4, 1997; father Marlin and special stepmom Barbara Shanks; sisters Stephanie (Rick) Moreton and Marlene (Rock) Morris. Ellen was predeceased by her mother and stepfather Miriam and Wendell Johnson. Also surviving are sisters- and brothers-in-law Cathy (Larry) Marvin, Rhonda (Tyler) Kaltenbach, Mark (Katy) Anderson and John (Sue) Anderson. She will be greatly missed by her nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Ellen was a hairdresser for more than 40 years and owned Union Hair Studio for the past 21 years. She was a member of Spring Valley Global Methodist Church. Affectionately known as "Elmer," she loved living in the country and farm life, beach vacations in Florida and Key West, playing euchre, and spending time with family and friends at Slim’s and Spillway Lodge.
Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8, 2023, at Spring Valley Global Methodist with Rev. Dar Hensley officiating. Friends may visit from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery, Xenia. Lunch will be served afterward at Ancil’s Place, Roxanna.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Spring Valley Global Methodist, 1 Walnut St; or Spring Valley Twp. Fire Dept., 2547 US Rte. 42 (both are in Spring Valley, OH 45370).
