Gene Scroggy Obituary

Gene A Scroggy was born on September 4, 1938, in Wilmington, Ohio. On February 8, 2025, he went to his heavenly home at the age of 86. He was preceded in death by his parents Carey and Dorothy Scroggy.

Gene was married to the love of his life, the late Charlene (Harvey) Scroggy for over 50 years. Together they had three children. Carrie Michaelis and husband Randy, of Wilmington Ohio, Gilbert Scroggy and wife Karen, of Wilmington Ohio, and Mozelle Bowers and husband John, of Roaring Springs, Pennsylvania.

Gene was blessed with seven wonderful grandchildren. Adam Michaelis and wife Tiffany, Daniel Michaelis and wife Molly, Seth Michaelis, Michael Stahl and wife Erica, Megan Borlie and husband Ben, Molly Vandervort and husband Richard, and Morgan Larrick and fiancé Tyler Shaw. In addition, he was equally blessed with 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Gilbert T. and wife Judy Scroggy of Wilmington; and his sister, Susanna Culberson of Summerville, South Carolina.

After serving 30 years in the United States Marine Corp and traveling all over the United States and North Africa, Gene retired at the rank of Captain. After retiring from the military, he then continued his career in corrections, which took him in two different directions. He served as Warden in Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, and Georgia, as well as serving as the Commissioner for the Department of Corrections, for the State of Mississippi.

Upon his final retirement he and Charlene enjoyed traveling and doing mission work through the Methodist Church. He was instrumental in starting two Men's prayer groups which continue to meet today. Often Gene was asked to lecture about his career in corrections. In doing so, he would take advantage of the opportunity and use it as a witness for his faith in God.
