James E. (Jim) Vest, Jr., age 72, of Lynchburg, died Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at Clinton Memorial Hospital in Wilmington. Jim was born December 20, 1948, in Princeton, West Virginia, the son of James Elwood and Nancy G. (Greaver) Vest. Jim was a Vietnam Veteran, having served in the United States Marine Corps., with a rank of Sergeant. Jim was awarded numerous decorations for his time served defending our country. He was a very proud Marine, with friendships that have lasted a lifetime. Jim was a brother Mason, an avid hunter and outdoorsman, who reaped the rewards and accomplishments of providing food for his family, as well as, putting mementos on his wall, and treasuring time spent with his family in the woods. Jim was a softball player in his younger years, playing in adult leagues in the Columbus area.  He also coached girls youth softball. He was also a powerlifter and gained many awards and trophies through the years, even well into his senior years. Jim loved to be outdoors with his animals. You would never catch him inside, even in the winter months. The garage was his man-cave and he spent many hours there. Jim was also very active with community service in Clinton County. He was a member of the Wilmington Hilde-Floyd Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #1224, and the Wilmington American Legion Post #49, where he held officer positions, and he was also a member of the Wilmington V.F.W. Post # 6710.  Jim loved to be on his Harley-Davidson, going on poker runs, and spending time with his friends. He will truly be missed by all. Jim leaves behind his wife, Sheri M. Vest of Lynchburg; mother, Nancy Greaver; children, Shelley M. (Jamie) Knowles of Wilmington and James E. (Danita) Vest of Wilmington; grandchildren Peyton, Nathan, Zack Vest and Mariah Knowles, all of Wilmington; brother, Jack (Debbie) Vest of New Vienna; and sisters, Paula K. (Mike) Homan of Hillsboro, and Penny Sutton of Wilmington. Jim is preceded by his father James E. Vest, Sr., and a sister, Pam Hunter.  Bob Baker will offer prayers at 4:45 p.m. Monday, December 13, 2021, at Brown Funeral Home, Wilmington.  Immediately following prayers, Military Honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post #49 Honor Guard.  Visitation will follow at the funeral home until 8:00 p.m.  Interment services will take place privately at the convenience of the family.  To leave an on-line condolence, please visit www.arehart-brown.com, or see our Facebook page, Brown Funeral Home.
