John Boyd Knox, Jr

John Boyd Knox, Jr., age 75, of Franklin, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. John was born on September 11, 1948, in Dayton, Ohio to John Boyd Knox, Sr. and Helen Marie (Marlow) Knox. He was a graduate of Old Orchard Beach High School in Old Orchard Beach, ME in the class of 1966. Following high school, he served his country in the U.S. Army, volunteering for deployment to Vietnam. He served from 1967-1969 specializing in ammunitions storage. For his service, he was recognized with the National Defense Service, Vietnam Campaign, and Vietnam Service Medals.  He was an employee of United Color Press for over 20 years. He enjoyed western and war movies. John had a multitude of hobbies over the years including woodworking and stamp collecting and even photography. He always found something to keep busy when he wasn’t working hard to support his family. In later years, he always enjoyed telling stories of his youth. From living on Tatoosh Island, Washington as his father served in the U.S. Coast Guard and tended Cape Flattery Lighthouse, to seeing the Seattle Space Needle being built and moving from Hawaii to Maine in the middle of winter. He always loved to talk about all the places he’d been and things he’d seen to anyone willing to lend an ear. He always asked everyone how many states they’d visited as he’d seen every state except Alaska.  Surviving John is his wife of 50 years, Wilma (McCarty) Knox, whom he married April 28, 1973, children Michael (Amy), Terry, and Christina (Darren) Cunningham; sister Patricia Sherlock, and brothers George Knox, and Jeffery (Lisa) Knox. John was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother Diane, and sister Kathy Back. He was loved by his family and will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Christopher, Matthew, and Rylee Knox and Felicity Cunningham.
