Martha C. Knowles, age 82, of Wilmington, passed away Monday, January 4, 2021 at the Clinton Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was born November 19, 1938 in Hale Hospital in Wilmington, the daughter of the late Louis and Jeanette (Hale) Cohn. Martha had been a member of the Faith Lutheran Church for many years, most recently a member of the Wilmington Lutheran Mission Church. She had retired from Wilmington City Schools after teaching in the High School for more than 30 years. Martha was a member of the Clinton County Retired Teachers Association, D.A.R. and D.A.C., and the Wilmington Lion’s Club. Martha was a very private individual, but there was no doubt that she loved her family, and missed her husband after losing him in 2015. She will miss, and be missed by her family, and friends whom she dearly loved. Martha is survived by her son and daughter in law Jamie and Shelley Knowles of Wilmington; granddaughter Mariah Knowles; and cousins, Leslie (Cathy) Stratton IV of Lafayette, Louisiana, Kent (Pam) Stratton of Memphis, Tennessee, Linda (Cary) Hancock of Memphis, Tennessee, Christie (Michael) Moody of Carlton, Georgia, Alan Hale of Wilmington, Myron Hale of Wilmington, and Johnny (Treasa) Hale of Wilmington. In addition to her parents, Martha is preceded in death by her husband James L. “Jim” Knowles. Graveside services will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 7, 2021 at Sugar Grove Cemetery.
