Rita E. Carey, 84, of Wilmington, passed away Monday, December 16, 2024, at Clinton Memorial Hospital. She was born October 10, 1940, in Wilmington, to Francis Oliver and Helen Mae Richardson. She lived all her life in Clinton County, mostly in Wilmington and resided the last year at Cape May. An avid reader and writer, she was City Editor of the Wilmington News-Journal, and later Communications Manager at Airborne Express before retiring early due to a chronic health condition. She loved Wilmington and gave back to her community, sitting on various boards over the years. She was a member of the Clinton County Republican Central Committee for decades and served on Wilmington City Council for 17 years. She is survived by two sons, Jamey (Tanya) Carey of Sabina and Jay (Susan) Carey of Galena; a sister Theresa (Stuart) Douglass of Aurora; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren, a great-great-grand daughter; two nieces, a nephew, and great-nieces and great-nephews. She is preceded by her parents and a sister, Barbara Hasler. Private services will be held at Brown Funeral Home, Wilmington, at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery.
