Obituary

Roger Jay Sprague, 92, a lifelong resident of Clinton County, went home to be with the Lord Thursday April 14, 2022 at home on his farm.  He was born December 1, 1929 to the late Karl and Erma Sprague. Roger grew up the youngest of four children, close to the property in which he spent his remaining years after his retirement from the Wilmington School System. He was a 1947 graduate of Wilmington High School and was actively involved in sports including baseball (both High School and Legion). Within the latter he played against a young veteran pitcher named Joe Nuxhall. Shortly after high school he married his high school sweetheart Marilyn Wical, with whom he enjoyed 72 years of marriage until the time of her passing on February 2, 2022.  During the early years of his marriage, Roger farmed until he became involved in a work/study program working in local factories as he attended college. He attained his BS at Wilmington College and his MA through Miami University in the early 1960s. He began teaching biology at Beavercreek High School, then Wilmington High School and then finished his teaching tenure as a guidance counselor at Wilmington Junior High – later known as Roger O. Borror Elementary. To so many students in the 1960's through the early 1990's era and beyond, he was always affectionately known as “Mr. Sprague”.  Roger loved education, and touched so many lives of students during his 30 years in education.  In addition to teaching, Roger was also a prominent local realtor who procured his license and began selling real estate in the late 1960's, starting with local firms, Smith, Babb and Seaman, Darbyshire & Associates and later - Coldwell Banker, and finishing with Bennett Realty. He had also owned Sprague and Associates, a realty company covering southwest Ohio.   At age 92 he was the most senior realtor in Clinton County.  Throughout his career in teaching and sales, Roger always kept a close bond with farming and the land, making himself available as time permitted to help his son Mark with various tasks around the land that he farms.  Roger was also a prominent musician, playing professionally for former classmate Vic Tooker and his “Riverboat Ramblers” jazz band. In addition, he played with classmates Joe Brown and Gene Sprouse in “The Hi Tones” as well as “The Firehouse Five”, “Bathhouse Five”, “A Touch of Class” and “Riverest”.  He was a long-standing member of Faith Baptist Church and served several years as a deacon and sustained many endearing friendships there throughout the years.  Roger is survived by his four children; David (Catherine) Sprague of Boulder, Colorado, Mark Sprague of Jamestown, Ohio, Matthew Sprague of Jeffersonville, Indiana, and Christopher Sprague of Wilmington, Ohio; 12 grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents Karl and Erma Sprague; sisters Virginia (Job) Kirk, Vivian (Thomas) Leasher and Mildred (Thomas) Doerman.  Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 22, 2022, at Faith Baptist Church, 1791 US Hwy 68N Wilmington, Ohio.  The funeral procession will make a brief passage by the Sprague family farm at Hickory Hill before proceeding to Sugar Grove Cemetery for interment.  All are Invited to return to Faith Baptist Church after funeral services and join in a celebration of Roger's life.  Visitation will be held at Brown Funeral Home 237 W.
