Shirley Day, 80, of Wilmington passed December 3, 2022, at home with her family after battling alzheimers for the past few years.
Shirley was born August 22, 1942, at her grandmothers home which is now Carolines Bed and Breakfast. Shirley loved to go back to the home and reminisce about her family and hosted many family events there. Shirley was preceeded in death by her parents, Donald and Ruby Hartley and her sister Brenda Hartley Fletcher. We are certain that their reunion in Heaven was epic.
Shirley married George Willilam (Bill) Day shortly after graduating high school. She spent their first years of marriage as an army wife at Fort Campbell Military Base. Shirley and Bill later opened Superior Cleaning and Carpet Sales (Superior Flooring). Shirley stayed home to raise her two children Sheri (JD) McIntosh and Brad (Jennifer) Day. When they were off to school, Shirley began working at the family business and spent over 30 years running the showroom there. Her kind, sunny customer service skills will be remembered by many in the community.
While Shirley (Granny Shirl) was a great mom, she was an even more awesome granny to her grandchildren Darren Day, Victoria (Al) Abdelfattah, Dillan (Jessica) Day, Zachary (Caitlyn Conley) and Mason McIntosh and to her great grandchildren Audra, Delilah, Daxton and Violet Day and Zayn, Yousef and Malek Abdelfattah. Shirley lived in the same neighborhood as her children and grandchildren and she never missed an opportunity to spend time with them. Shirley was their first choice babysitter and could be talked into any activity with them including pillow fort building, games and hide and seek. She rarely missed an event her grandchildren were a part of and has graced the seating of more sporting events, plays and concerts than could be counted.
Shirley resisted wintering in Florida for years because she "didn't want to miss" any of the grandkids events. After the youngest graduated High school, Shirley and Bill spent their winters in a neighborhood of friends and family in Bradenton Florida.
Shirley will be missed by many including her very best friend and caregiver in her final months, Marteena Christen. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m on Wednesday, December 7, 2022, at Brown Funeral Home, Wilmington. Burial will follow in the Springfield Friends Cemetery, 121 Todds Fork Rd, Wilmington, OH. Friends may visit from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday. Calvin Martin will officiate the service. Brown Funeral Home, Wilmington is serving the family.
