Susan Hazard Douglass

Susan Hazard Douglass, age 83, passed peacefully, Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at Cape May in Wilmington. She was born on October 1, 1940, to the late Dr. Frank and Barbara Hazard. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Rebecca Hazard Rauch. Mrs. Douglass is survived by her daughter Jennifer (Jeremy) Ramage and their children, Alison, Patrick, and Gwendolyn, of Loveland, Ohio, brother-in-law Donald Rauch of The Villages, Florida, and nephew Craig Knight-Rauch (Dr. John Knight-Rauch) of Washington Township, Ohio.

Mrs. Douglass was a graduate of Wilmington High School and Rollins College (1958, 1962). She was a third grade teacher in Hamilton City Schools for many years before returning to Wilmington, where she taught seventh and eighth grades until her retirement in 1995. She had an incredible memory and would often cite the class period and seat location of former students when telling classroom stories. She is remembered fondly as a teacher who developed confidence in her students and showed unwavering support through attendance at innumerable athletic events, musicals, 4-H demonstrations and livestock shows, concerts, and more.

She was a member of the Saint Nicholas Club that raised money for local charities and a lifelong member of the Wilmington Friends Meeting. An avid supporter of the arts, she frequented the Aronoff Center and Playhouse in the Park and loved annual performances staged by Wilmington College Community Summer Theatre. She also enjoyed the camaraderie among women in Daughters of the American Revolution and Colonial Dames, Six & Twenty Club, and multiple bridge clubs. Her love for all card games was eclipsed only by her love for her family and friends!

Calling hours will be Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at Brown Funeral Home, Wilmington, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. followed by a "Celebration of Life" service at 1:00 p.m. A private graveside service will be at Sugar Grove Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
